The Perghenegi project comes at a pivotal time for folk music education in Cornwall. Cornish music and dance is enjoying an explosion of interest and Cornwall Council moves towards the implementation of Curriculum Kernewek. What place will cornish folk have in schools? How can we create clear pathways for young people to discover their local music? What do young people want from folk music education? Lowender have secured seed funding to help answer these questions and to increase opportunities for folk music teaching in schools across Cornwall.

Your participation will be a crucial step in this journey, helping us all discover how Cornish folk music is passed on, in your local community, in your choir, in your school. We will also discuss opportunities for teaching folk music in schools in the next academic year and beyond.

The first Cornwall Youth Folk Ensemble Session – 27th of April, 12:30-4:30 in Redruth
Address: Redruth Wesleyan Jubilee Hall, Wesley Street, Redruth, TR15 2EG

Book your spot here

www.ticketsource.co.uk/lowender/pergheneghi-cornish-youth-folk-ensemble-launch/

About the ensemble:
A chance for young people aged 16 – 25yrs to come together and play Cornish folk music

Who can join?

We are looking for musicians of any instrument or genre, with or without experience of folk, who are confident in playing their chosen instrument. You do not need to be able to read sheet music. If your only instrument is voice it might not be the easiest to always join in.

What’s involved?

Part 1: April – October 2024

Bringing the ensemble together

There will be a series of weekend workshops (see them all bellow) where you will get to know other members of the group and what it’s like to play in an ensemble. You will be encouraged to bring tunes, learn tunes, explore and experiment with a repertoire of Cornish material.

Sessions will be facilitated by Daniel Woodfield (a multi-instrumentalist, composer and musical director), with support from other professional musicians. Perghenegi means to ‘claim’ or ‘takeover’ in the Cornish language, so while the sessions are facilitated, the purpose of the Youth Folk Ensemble is that it is owned and led by young people.

On Friday 25th October the ensemble are invited to share what they’ve learnt at the Thriving Traditions Concert at the Lowender Celtic Festival in Redruth (but no one is obliged to perform if they don’t feel comfortable).

Part 2: January – April 2025

Mash Up!

The Cornwall Youth Folk Ensemble will work with other Cornwall based ensembles to experience playing with different genre types and to experiment with different approaches to traditional tunes.

What should I bring?

Yourself, your instrument, and an open mind. Wear comfy clothes that you feel comfortable moving in.

Do I need to pay?
No, these sessions are free of charge and open to anyone aged 16 – 25yrs.

What does Perghenegi mean?

Perghenegi means to ‘claim’ or ‘takeover’ in the Cornish language

The project is a collaboration between Lowender and ASONE, and funded by Youth Music and Arts Council England.

 Treylva Concert – 27th April?

Our first Youth Folk Ensemble Session combines with the Treylva Collective Concert at the Wesleyan Church in Redruth at 7pm

Treylva are a new collective of Cornish Language song writers who are working with the Cornwall Concert orchestra for their launch.

Anyone coming to the Youth Folk Ensemble will get free access to this memorable concert.

Do I have to come to the Lowender Youth Advisory Committee too?

No, the Lowender Youth Advisory Committee is separate to the Youth Folk Ensemble.

The Youth Advisory Committee helps the Lowender board make decisions in line with what young people want, including our festival, concert series, workshop series and our outreach projects. If you fancy helping shape these things then feel free to come along!

Can’t make this one?

No worries, see bellow for more dates and check back for announcements.

You don’t have to attend all of these sessions and you can join whenever.

Things to know:

Daniel Woodfield is working with Lowender on a PhD research project and these sessions will form part of that research.

Your engagement in the research requires consent so we will hand out some forms on arrival. Find out more here.

We will organise specialists to come and in help you learn abut the things you want to learn, so get your thinking caps on.

This ensemble is parter of a broader project looking into Cornish music education so there is lots of opportunities to have a say and develop your skills in different ways.

Cornwall Youth Folk Ensemble

The Cornwall Youth Folk Ensemble is a new venture with ASONE launching in the summer of 2024 aiming to create an ensemble celebrating distinctly Cornish Celtic music.

The Youth Advisory Committee is a group of young people who advise the board of Lowender. They ensure that young peoples views are represented in the running of the organisation and hold us accountable to the future that they want.
